new favorite website: my vintage vogue
Have spent the morning oogling a website I just found called My Vintage Vogue. It is filled with classic photos, covers, illustrations, etc. from fashion magazines throughout the decades. I can't stay away, despite being at work right now.
Check out some examples posted at Modish:

depeche mode: 'corrupt' featuring true blood
Just love this video for the season finale for True Blood. Features an amazing song by Depeche Mode.
I still like Eric better than Bill. Bill is kind of a bore. Feel free to yell at me.

how useless knowledge comes in handy when you least expect it
I want to share a post from the blog of one of my favorite authors, Lauren Willig. She blogs a bit on the history of England's George III as well as an incident that occurred when she was in law school. It is amazing how random useless knowledge can come in handy at the most opportune times.
Check out the short anecdote on her blog.
Also check out her novels. She crafts fun and witty stories that are a mix of historical drama, mystery, romance and comedy. My personal favorite is The Seduction of the Crimson Rose with The Masque of the Black Tulip a close second.

vena cava 2010
Vena Cava just release pictures from their recent show during Fashion Week here in New York. They attribute their inspiration to the Ndeble tribe, 90's Versace and Maude Lebowski.
I can definitely see Maude rockin' these looks in her studio in between painting nude from a zip line.
Two of my favorites:
See more pictures on their blog,Viva Vena Cava on this POST and this POST.

disco dancing darcy...and the conga
Pride and Prejudice is one of my absolute favorite stories. Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy are one of the greatest couples of classic literature and Jane Austen, ahead of her time.
This clip from series 3 of the British sketch show, That Mitchell and Webb Look takes a classic discourse between Eliza, Caroline Bingley and Darcy and completely turns it on its head - not to mention a Disco dance that looks like...well, you'll see.
I suggest that if you are at work, close the door to your office, you may scare your co-workers by falling off your chair laughing.
I am going to have to check out more of this show. I really wish SNL were more like this show and others from Europe and Canada. They are so much more creative in their ideas. I really miss The Kids in the Hall.
Enjoy!!
oh, for more hysterical fun also check out this:

utterly 'fantastic'!!
One of my favorite directors, Wes Anderson is working on a stop-motion version of Roald Dahl's The Fantastic The Mr. Fox starring the voices of George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, Meryl Streep and Jason Schwartzman.
Check out this short featurette HERE featuring interviews with Wes and Roald's widow.
For more information, production still and the trailer, go HERE.
This is definitely one I am looking forward to seeing.

falling whistles
I spend my days working to raise money to help people all over the world. The organization I work for as a fundraiser has a presence in over 70 countries around the world.
But I am not here to talk about my employer but another organization working to help those who have no one to speak for them. Every week I read and write about elderly and families living in poverty you cannot even imagine - but in some ways it is nothing to what is happening in the Congo.
Please take the time to go to http://www.fallingwhistles.com/. Read their story. It sickens me that there are men out there that act as savagely as these soldiers do. I can't even write the words.
I just bought one of the whistles they sell to raise money - a win-win for both of us. They get my donation to help those affected by the war and I get to make a statement that is both fabulously fashionable but also social conscious. How cool is that?!?!

Rodarte Spring 2010
picture from Hanneli
From Refinery29:
"Before the crowd was hushed and abrupt blackness gave way to chartreuse neon and billowing smoke at Rodarte, we weren't even sure where the camoflauged runway began or ended. But once the first look appeared—contoured in black tribal tattoos, hems of shredded cheesecloth, and leather at the base of wrapped dresses fit for nomads—we knew where to look. The clothes fit right into the neo-survivalist, pre-apocalyptic landscape that seems to be inspiring everyone's palette these days. From the deconstructed cut-out layers in all textures to models who nearly took nose dives in towering Kirkwood heels, the mood was intense. The Mulleavy sisters delivered a glimpse of devastation with a shot of futuristic glamour that we can only hope to adorn ourselves in once the world ends as we know it."

latest film obsession: 'the imaginarium of doctor parnassus'
I love Terry Gilliam - from his work with Monty Python (will come back to that one in another post) to Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Muchausen. even The Brothers Grimm (although not his best work in my opinion, but still beautiful). I have not seen Time Bandits yet but its on my Netflix list.
But check out these stills from his latest work, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. STUNNING!! I am going to go into overload just trying to take it all in when I go to see it in theaters.

s.love lovin'
Talk about GEORGEOUS!!
s.love is beyond amazing. Each piece is hand painted and made to order - and their fall line is to die for.
I am totally digging the Tekay gown and am somehow trying to justify buying it for myself. The Desta dress is also drool-worthy. I so need to win the lottery right now.
To see and shop the collection, go to http://slovenyc.com/

sham wow ...at fashion week???
Huh???
Check it out at Fashion Week Takes a Turn For the Creepy at CityFile. Apparently he wants to break into the fashion world himself.
Only time will tell if he should keep his day job. I'm on the fence on that one.

conflicted over fashion's night out
New York. The clothes shopping mecca of the US (there are those who would argue but lets not get into that here). Every brand, store, label, you name it, that I have ever wanted to own/wear can be found in this city - new pre-owned, vintage, whatever. It is located somewhere on this small island.
Granted, I can't afford most of what I would LOVE to wear, but what else are parents visiting for the weekend who feel guilty because they can't see you often enough for?
The opening of a new store is an event in of itself. When I went to the opening night at Topshop with my friend, the line when almost all the way around the entire block - and that was at 6:00 pm. I can't imagine what it looked like first thing in the morning.
Enter Fashion's Night Out. It is being marketed as an event to 'help' the ailing fashion industry and 'save' several thousand jobs. Personally, in an industry that can sell spandex biker shorts for over $300 dollars just because it has a 'name' attached to it, does not need to be saved so much. But at the same time, they are collecting clothes for charity and raising money for charity through their t-shirt sales, not to mention that there are some great parties to go to with live bands, guest appearances (though that includes the Olsen twins - what are they doing now besides 'appearing' anyway?) and a lot of fun.
So what is a girl to do? Buy in to the hypocrisy or make a statement that no one will really care about?
Some others opinions on the subject:

bork, bork, bork!!
It seems like I am on a total Muppets kick. It seems like they keep popping up everywhere.
Was conducting a search on YouTube and stumbled upon clips from The Muppet Show. I spent many a wonderful evening waiting for that Dance Fever disco dance show to be over so I could spend a blissful 1/2 hour with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzy, Gonzo and of course, the Swedish Chef!
So I spent a blissful hour or two watching old clips of that Scandinavian menace to talking food attempt to create culinary masterpieces and it still makes me laugh as much as it did when I was 4 years old, although I probably have a greater appreciation for the genius of Jim Henson and his crew of puppet masters.
The only drawback - the song has been in my head all week.
Hopefully this will purge my recent Muppets fixation.

Latest Film Obsession: Velvet Goldmine (1998)
Citizen Kane meets 70s Glam Rock
That is the best way to describe this unlikely amalgamation of an amazing music movement and one of, if not THE greatest film of all time. Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ewan McGregor, Toni Collette, Eddie Izzard and Christian Bale and directed by Todd Haynes, the film is the story of Brian Slade, a star of the Glam Rock scene based loosely on David Bowie.
Using the conventions and structure created in Citizen Kane, Arthur Stuart (Bale), a former devotee and fan of Glam Rock and now a reporter, takes a journey through the life of Brian Slade (Meyers) and the people who shaped his career and life to find out why he disappeared after an ill-fated publicity stunt.
I won't go into the particulars of the plot, but you can read about it HERE and get more information HERE.
I have been listening to the soundtrack NON-STOP all week. The only regret I have about the soundtrack is that it is not the original voices of the actors from the film singing the tracks, with the exception of the '20th Century Boy' by Placebo, who were featured in the film.

Muppets Take Fashion
How awesome is THIS?!?!?!?
Two things I love working together - the Muppets and Marc Jacobs. Miss Piggy is a fashion icon going back to when I was in pre-school!! She always rocks whatever she was wearing.
The Muppets have been on my mind all week. I was on YouTube the other day trying to find something and stumbled upon old clips of the show, things I have not seen in years. I spent way too long watching the Swedish Chef and his theme song is now stuck in my head permanently.

Not entirely sure what to make of this...
From EJewish Philanthropy Blog - you can see the entire post at Video: Birthright Continues to Push the Creative Envelope.
Birthright Israel is incredibly creative when it comes to marketing their free trips to Israel, just putting a toe over the line of appropriateness without really going too far. This video is giggle-worthy, don't doubt that. I am just unsure of what to really think about this latest effort.
