weapons as art???

I am unsure of what to make of this latest series of works from Russian-based illustration studio, Geliografic - on the one hand it is rather beautiful.  Using classic still life motifs, they incorporated modern weaponry into the composition.  The paintings are full of life but the inclusion of guns, rocket launchers, grenades, etc. into the image is an interesting statement, one that is both intriguing and frightening at the same time.

I mean, what does this say about the world the we live in today; that the placing of instruments of death into the works is taken with such complacency.  Yet, on the other hand, they are also tools of protection but it is unfortunate that such things must exist in the first. place.  I suppose it is all a statement on the modern  world and its cynicism and apathy towards death and destruction.

Alright, enough of my rambling thoughts.  See more HERE and after the cut.  Also check out the other amazing work from Geliographic at their WEBSITE

bike polo

IAM1 - BIKE POLO par Alban Teurlai from Nike Studio on Vimeo.

Not quite as good as Polo in my humble opinion (although anything involving horses, with some exceptions, usually is a good thing), but it looks like a lot of fun.

I am in love with these gorgeous illustrations by Masaki Mizuno for Clear Magazine from last month's issue in honor of Fashion Week.  I just had to post it as soon as I found them!!

Inspired by world-class designers including Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Maison Martin Margiela, Miu Miu, Nina Ricci, Givenchy, Prada, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga and Christian Dior,  he has truly captured their essence - I am totally blown away.

pomme chan

I am definitely on an art kick lately.  Lately there are so many artists whose work has moved or touched me in some way and this is the only place to keep them so I can revisit them as much as I like so everyone gets to join in the fun!!.

Pomme Chan, is an illustrator and typographer originally from Bangkok and is now based in the UK. Her fashion illustrations just wow me beyond belief.

According to the artist, "Using her unique felt-tip style, Pomme draws inspiration from nature, fashion, architecture, Music and the female form."

See more of her work at her WEBSITE and after the cut.

drew tal

Just discovered this amazing artist through this POST over at Trend Land.

Amazing is the only word to to describe it.  Drew Tal grew up in Israel and according to the artist, that because he was "surrounded with such a colorful collage of ethnicities, languages, nationalities, cultures and religions made me realize from an early age that the world beyond me was a rich and complex place.  This revelation opened my eyes to the exotic and made me extremely curious about people and their religions, customs, costumes and histories."

He describes his work as such: "my art is a personal investigation across cultural bounds into the underlying human themes and common spiritual threads found in religious, mythological and sexual expression."

Check out more of his work at his website, drewtal.com.

Am in love with this lookbook from Lyell.  I don't often go for soft and feminine but something just feels right about these pieces and the composition of the photographs.

edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros

This has been growing on me the more I watch it. Not my usual musical styling choice, but I kind of like it.

Reminds me a bit of Hot Club of Cowtown - sort of. Don't know why but it does.

shoe insanity

Refinery 29 recently blogged about the crazy shoes that have been seen going down the runways of the Fall Fashion Weeks worldwide.

"Bizarre Birkenstock hybrids, ten-inch tip-toe-rs, and those McQueen exoskeleton heels made for memorable Fashion Week moments, but are they fit for us plebes? We've rounded up the most peculiar of pairs to come down a catwalk to ask you—can you imagine yourself with lobster claws as feet, or is that something best left to those in La-La Land?"

Love it. And this, the video for Novel. It reminds me of Le Voyage Dans La Lune from 1902, though this video was shot in entirely still photos.

missed connections

I was recently directed to this blog called Missed Connections and had to check it out when I read the description. The author and artist, Sophie Blackall describes the project as such:

"Messages in bottles, smoke signals, letters written in the sand; the modern equivalents are the funny, sad, beautiful, hopeful, hopeless, poetic posts on Missed Connections websites. Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I'm trying to pin a few of them down."

drinking the 'where the wild things are' kool-aid

I have been following the development of this film since it was first announced that Spike Jonze would be at the helm and have been waiting impatiently for October 16 to come.

To be totally honest, it was never a favorite book when I was little, I think it scared me a bit but as a 'grown up', I can definitely appreciate the beauty of the story and drawings. I will definitely have to get this book for my neice for her 1st birthday. Every kid should have a copy in their library.

What I have seen of this film so far has blown me away. The whole world that Spike has created is one of wonder and discovery. You can visit the official website HERE

latest iTunes download: au revoir simone

Directed by Brendan Colthurst and Vikram Gandhi of DISPOSABLE, the latest music video for “Shadows” by Au Revoir Simone from their 2009 release, Still Night, Still Light.

Totally love this song and video. As soon as the video finished playing I went to iTunes and downloaded the album. Even David Lynch, one of my all-time FAVORITE directors weighed in on their fabulousness.

David Lynch about Au Revoir Simone: (via Cyana Trend Land)

“I LOVE AU REVOIR SIMONE ….. THESE GIRLS HAVE WHAT IT TAKES ….. MUSIC JUST FLOWS OUT OF THEM SO NATURALLY – AND IT’S GREAT MUSIC …… THIS VIDEO FOR “SHADOWS” – FROM THEIR NEW ALBUM “STILL NIGHT, STILL LIGHT” IS MIGHTY – THE COLOR AND THE LIGHT ARE STELLAR – THE MOVES AND LOOKS – MINIMAL – CLEAN – MODERN AND SOLID ….. IT ALL COMES ALONG SO WELL SUPPORTING THE GIRLS AND THEIR MUSIC ….. ANNIE, ERIKA AND HEATHER HAVE GOT THEIR ACT TOGETHER – THEY’RE BIG – BUT THEY’RE GONNA BE BIGGER – THEY’RE GONNA BE REAL BIG”

the end starts here - the photography of rodney smith

I love this photograph...

and pretty much all the pretties on Rodney Smith's blog The End Starts Here.  Each week he posts one of his amazing photos and discusses its origins, motivations and history - a really amazing insight into the mind of the artist.

This particular photo is called Gary Descending Staircase, Parc de Sceaux and you can read about it HERE.
